Our Musical Director is John Wigham.
John learned to play a brass instrument at the age of nine years old at the Salvation Army Whitehaven Corps under the tuition of the late Hugh Robinson and has been playing in the Salvation Army band there for forty six years.
He was also instructed in the rudiments of music and singing by the late Baxter Shaw.
John is a life long member of the Whitehaven Salvation Army where he is the Songster leader (Choir leader), a position he has held for the last thirty five years.
John has been playing Eb Bass with Cleator Moor Brass since 2008 and while the post of Musical Director is a new experience for John he is confident that under his direction the band will continue to improve their standard of playing and entertaining.
Cleator Moor Brass aims to provide musical entertainment for the general public in and around the West Cumbria area.
We are a mixed age group ranging from 10 years to over 70 years. We are of mixed playing ability, but we all strive at all times to achieve the best musical standard and we all gain much satisfaction and pleasure from playing in the band in public performances.
We practice on Monday and Thursday evenings at St John’s Church, Cleator Moor (next to Cleator Moor Co-op) from 7pm to 9pm and we welcome anyone who would like to come and join us. For directions see here.
If you have never played before and would like to learn just come along to a practice evening, have a listen and see what you think!
Alternatively, if you have played in the past (some of us have taken up playing again after 20 to 30 years rest!) and you would like to take up playing again, don’t be scared, just come along to one of our practice nights and have a listen and a chat you will be made most welcome.
If you are organising an event where you would like to us come and play or would like us to perform a concert at your chosen venue, simply get in touch either using the contact details at the foot of the page or use the contact us page, we will endeavour to get back to you within 48 hours. We do not charge for our performances but a donation to our funds is always gratefully appreciated.
